One morning the husband returns after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, and reads her book.Along came a Game Warden in his boat. He pulled up alongside the woman and said, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?'
'Reading a book,' she replied, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?')
'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informed her.
'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading'.
'Yes, but you have all the equipment . For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and report you".
'For reading a book?' she replied,
'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informed her again.'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading'.
'Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.. I'll have to take you in and report you.
''If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault,' said the woman.'But I haven't even touched you,' said the game warden.
'That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.
''Have a nice day ma'am,' he said and left.

Tips to save tax - purchase of equipment or vehicles

If you are approaching your accounting year end and you know you are going to make a purchase of plant and equipment or change your Car or Van (which you use in connection with your business) then it makes sense to make this purchase before your year end rather than after. If you leave it till after, then you will have to wait until the next year end to get the benefit of the expenditure. Remember though this is only relevent if you were going to make the expenditure for sure. If not dont do it for the sake of it, cos you will only get £20 back for every £100 you spend and just to save tax without any commercial basis for the expenditure would be silly!

Ask for help

I know how hard it can be when you have a problem and feel that you can t ask for help -maybe because you feel that you should know the answer or you are scared someone will think less of you. No one is born knowing all the answers, most of the time you have to be shown (well most things until you get the hang of it). So dont struggle on your own, if you can, put your hand up and ask. Look, i'm talking about bookkeeping, accounting and tax here, but the principle applies to other parts of your life too. This is really a quite hard for me to admit the level of conditioning I grew up with on this point, even I must 'unlearn what i have learned'. There is no way I could have learned to play the fiddle without help! or for that matter learned about how to keep records, prepare accounts etc without having been shown by someone.

Any thoughts people.......

State pension

So you've worked your whole life and paid for a state pension - the amount youll receive will be a modest amount - I think its wrong that the Government treat this as taxable income - it should be tax free! By concession to the Governments need to raise taxes, anyone with more than £100K in income and over the age of 65 should have this state pension taxed as 100K is more than enough to live on. Do you agree?

Banks are not your friends (part 1)

Yep, I've been meaning to write something on this topic for years. I love the way that the Bank sells itself in the Branch with various advertising of happy smiling Bank people who are doing something wonderful for their customers. Look, they are in the business of selling you something in order that they can make a profit. It is up to you to decide if it is inappropriate but if they can sell you something and make an easy buck you can bet that they will. And remember that if you borrow money and cannot pay it back, just you watch their happy smiley faces change to stone and pass your debt straight to their legal department for collection faster that you can say 'bad debt'. OK I know that sometimes you need finance for your business, all i'm saying is that when you sign on the dotted line for the borrowing, just do it with your eyes open and consideration of the risk This is especially true if you are having to give a personal guarantee and security (which might be security of your home). Remember, if you cannot repay the debt they will take your home away. So now more than ever, if you need borrowing for your business make sure that you talk top friends and family members and your professional adviser (me) to make sure that what you want the money for is based on sound reasoning (e.g. the ability to make future profits and ready cash to pay your monthly repayment. It is like this, Banks give you an umbrella, but when it starts raining, they want it back! Here endeth the lesson .
